The Secret to Creating a Comfortable Home

Yes or no — is your home comfortable?

The answer has nothing to do with how much money, square footage or how many nice things you have. It has to do with a secret I’ll share with you in this latest blog.

I grew up ashamed of my childhood homes. My family was on welfare and lived in Section 8 housing. I didn’t have a designated bedroom. My brother and I slept in the same room with our parents on two mattresses on the floor, without a bed frame. There were springs sticking out of the couch — the list goes on. Lots of emotions surface when I think back to my childhood home. No wonder I was embarrassed of having friends over.

I found myself enjoying — and LOVING — spending time at my buddy Andy’s house. His mom was a foster mother and she did a hell of a job as the Martha Stewart of her home.

I realized the decor in her home matched. There was a theme, and more importantly, the living room was cozy and functional — conducive to communing, relaxing and chatting.

The kitchen was big and open, perfect for a dinner party with a fabulous tablescape, yet relaxed enough to have a casual afternoon tea. It felt like home, and I wanted to be there more than my house.

We all have been in homes like this. So what makes the house or apartment a COMFORTABLE home?

There is a secret to this. The story of Andy’s home was eerily similar to the story of Maxwell Gillingham-Ryan’s book, “Apartment Therapy,” which explains what makes a home comfortable:

Take Action

If you answered NO to the question, “Is your home comfortable?” the next question is, “What will you do to make it comfortable, inspiring and more in the flow?”

It is often said when you take care of home matters, everything else comes into flow.

Will you clean, dust and declutter? That’s a great place to start. It may seem daunting, but try to tackle one room a week. Whether you use Marie Kondo’s “KonMarie” method or ask a beloved friend to help you clear and clutter, you’ll notice the energy and flow in other parts of your life when you do this!
