Morning Hack to Help You Breathe Easy

What’s the first thing you do when you wake up in the morning? Before you open that IG, Facebook or Twitter app, take a moment to breathe in that fresh air.

I’ve shared some of my morning routines, which include making tea and lemon water, meditating and other self-care tips I do before giving myself to the world for the day. You’ll feel refreshed if you do this one, too:

Take Action

One of the first things I do when I wake up is to open the windows in my bedroom and living room. Here’s why:

1. Lets in fresh air — replace that stagnant air replete with not-so-fresh odors we involuntarily dispel whilst in slumber
2. Clears the energy — stuck energy that has been sitting in the room
3. Changes our mood — try it and notice how you feel. Do you take deep breaths? Feel like you’re floating?

Mentally and physically, just 15 minutes of open windows is enough to clear the stagnant air.

Extra Extra

I live in an old remodeled Victorian in San Francisco on an extremely steep hill. Not a lot of traffic comes by, so there’s plenty of fresh air in the morning. If you live on a busy street, opening up the windows during rush-hour traffic may not be the best idea — do it at your discretion. You can also get a good air purifier to help eliminate dust, pollen, pet dander and pollution. I have a Dyson Pure Cool Link and love it.

Whenever I open a window, I take a moment to pause, take a breath and be calm. Every morning, as the fresh air moves through my lungs, I ask myself, what energy in my life isn’t flowing?

If worries arise, let them go while meditating. I don’t worry about things I can’t fix. Instead, I address the things I can. For example, if bills are piling up, stressing isn’t going to pay them down. Instead, think about constructive solutions — a part time job, networking with your peeps or reaching out to a trusted friend/family member. Worrying is only going to steal the present moment away.

I was surprised to hear many people don’t open their windows daily. Simply opening up a window and letting the energy flow, being present to what is working and isn’t in your life, and breathing works wonders — there’s no better way to start your day.
